Meet Christine: Building Community, Creativity and Opportunity

For Christine, home has always been about more than four walls. It is about connection, stability, and having the freedom to pursue the things that matter most.
Finding Stability and Staying Creative
Since moving into her Bellwether community in 2012, Christine has found a home that allows her to balance work, creativity, and community.
The location has been one of its greatest benefits. With access to numerous transit options, commuting has remained convenient throughout different stages of her career. While working in Redmond, she was able to travel easily to and from work. Her husband has also benefited from the neighborhood's accessibility, walking to each of his jobs over the years and now commuting to his current role.
Living in a central, affordable location has made it possible for Christine and her husband to focus on building their future while remaining connected to the city they love.
Outside of work, she continues to pursue her passion for art. One of her favorite creative outlets is creating kinetigrams, a unique art form in which she holds a drawing instrument while riding in a moving vehicle, allowing the motion of the journey itself to create the artwork.
For Christine, creativity and community are deeply connected. Both require curiosity, openness, and a willingness to see possibilities where others may not.
A Community That Looks Out for One Another
What Christine values most about her home is the sense of belonging she has found among her neighbors.
Over the years, her floor has become more than just a collection of apartments. It has become a community.
Neighbors know one another by name. Many have lived in the building for years, creating lasting relationships and support networks. Residents maintain a phone chain and regularly check in on one another, ensuring that help is available when someone needs it.
"Community is important to me," Christine says. "I like that I know my neighbors."
That spirit of connection extends throughout the building. Christine credits Bellwether staff with helping create opportunities for residents to build relationships and access resources.
She especially appreciates Resident Services Coordinator Isabel and the community events that bring neighbors together.
"I love that Isabel is available for anyone who needs resources, and to throw community events," she says.
Christine also recognizes the role that responsive property management plays in helping residents feel secure and supported.
"I really think that Bobbye has done a great job of listening to the residents and prioritizing the issues of the building," she says.
For Christine, affordable housing has provided something invaluable: the opportunity to focus on building a future while remaining connected to the people and passions that make life fulfilling.
A Foundation Built on Hard Work
Growing up in a large family, Christine witnessed firsthand the challenges her parents faced while working to provide for eight children. When her father lost his job in 2007, the family experienced a period of uncertainty that left a lasting impression on her.
Feeling a responsibility to help, Christine moved out at 18 while pursuing her education. With the support of financial aid through FAFSA, she attended the University of Washington and worked toward a degree in Earth Science.
The journey was not always easy. Like many students, she balanced academics with the realities of supporting herself. At the same time, she nurtured her creative side, performing in a band that toured throughout the region.
After graduating in 2012, Christine expected to quickly find a full-time position in her field. Instead, she encountered a challenging job market and spent nearly two years searching for stable employment.
More than 200 job applications later, she finally secured the kind of steady work she had been pursuing.
That experience shaped her perspective on opportunity and reinforced the importance of having affordable housing available for people who are just starting their careers.
"This is so necessary for people who are entering the workforce or graduating from college," she says.
Making Room for Opportunity
As someone who remembers the challenges of starting a career and searching for stable employment, Christine believes deeply in the importance of affordable housing.
She sees it as a critical resource for people who are working toward their goals while contributing to their communities.
"I love that these apartments are here for folks who are working their way up," she says.
She also appreciates the diversity of people who call the community home.
"I love that baristas and bartenders are able to live here and do what they love, and be able to afford to live," she says. "Money isn't everything."
For Christine, affordable housing helps create space for people to pursue meaningful careers, explore their passions, and build connections with their neighbors without being overwhelmed by the rising cost of living.
Creating a Home
After more than a decade in her Bellwether home, Christine continues to value the stability and opportunities it has provided.
It has been a place where she could launch a career, nurture her creativity, and build lasting relationships with the people around her; where neighbors become friends, community matters, and people look out for each other.
