Eddie and Vanessa have called Kingway Apartments home for nearly 30 years. Their experience highlights the vital importance of affordable housing and supportive community for families in the Greater Seattle area.
Growing Together at Bellwether Housing
When Eddie and Vanessa first moved into Kingway Apartments in 1998, they quickly felt at home. Eddie joined Bellwether Housing’s maintenance team over 20 years ago, first as an on-call technician and later as a full-time team member. Vanessa, a lifelong Seattle resident, also joined Bellwether after Eddie encouraged her to apply. She started as an assistant site manager and then moved into a front desk coordinator position at the Bellwether office. Today, she finds deep satisfaction in helping residents and making a daily difference in their lives.
Why Affordable Housing Matters
For Eddie and Vanessa, affordable housing is essential. It allows them to continue living in Seattle, a city with high costs of living.
Eddie explains, “If we didn’t live in affordable housing, we wouldn’t be able to live in Seattle. Even though we are a two-income household, we still couldn’t.”
Rooted in Community
The strong bonds they’ve formed within their community have kept Eddie and Vanessa at Bellwether Housing all these years. They’ve watched countless children, including their own, grow up in the Kingway community.
Vanessa proudly noted, “It’s a pleasure that our grandkids and great grandkids get a chance to grow up in the same community and home their parents did. How many people get that?”
Blending Work, Home, & Community
Both Bellwether and Kingway have made a home in their hearts and become a community that they deeply value. For Eddie and Vanessa, work and home have become naturally connected, both strengthening their ties to the community they care about.
“I love the people I work with,” Vanessa says. “Kingway is home. It’s my community. It feels good to help my community and for folks to know I’m one of them and they can come to me.”
