Advocacy

Examples of Bellwether’s recent and current advocacy efforts

  • Seattle Housing Levy Renewal – Our board members and employees were active in educating voters about the 2009 renewal of the Seattle Housing Levy. Through our help, the levy renewal passed with 66% of the voters saying YES.
  • Washington State Housing Trust Fund – Our team went to Olympia to stress the importance of funding the State of Washington Housing Trust Fund in 2010, which was under the budget knife. The legislature included $50 million in the current biennium budget.
  • We applied for and now help manage a $5 million Sustainable Communities Initiative Regional Planning Grant (HUD).
  • We supported the renewal of the multifamily property tax exemption in Seattle.
  • We supported incentive zoning for affordability in Seattle and other King County cities.

You can help make affordability more available for everyone, three ways:

  • Learn about the benefits of having affordable places to live in your neighborhood— social, economic and environmental benefits.
  • Talk to your friends and neighbors, and visit, call or write your elected officials to let them know that the healthiest communities are those that welcome people with diverse income levels.
  • Contribute to Bellwether to support our success in providing excellent affordable places to live for low-wage working people, their families, and seniors.

Closer to Home: Our inaugural fundraising breakfast

Today was an important and memorable day for Housing Resources Group supporters, staff, residents and donors. We not only raised $110,685 at this morning’s event, but we unveiled our new name. Housing Resources Group is now Bellwether. The name changes, but the focus remains: to lead the region in solving its most pressing housing affordability issues. [...]

AFFORDABLE HOUSING – WHO NEEDS IT?

Do you know that working people in Seattle need affordable housing? Here’s an unavoidable reality: many people with full-time or part-time jobs – or more than one job! – face a growing gulf between what they earn and what it costs to rent a place to live. Minimum wage is simply not enough to afford to pay market-rate rents.
