KEYNOTE

Featuring a Keynote Address by Stephen Bezruchka

Closer to Home features a Keynote Address by Stephen Bezruchka, Associate Teaching Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Health Systems & Population Health and Global Health at the School of Public Health, University of Washington.

Stephen, who began treating individuals as an emergency physician, has changed his focus to treating countries as a population health doctor. This shift resulted from his recognizing that living in the United States compromised his health in ways that it wouldn’t be if he had been born in Japan, Slovenia, Sweden, or Spain.

Stephen is the author of "Inequality Kills Us All," which addresses how economic and social inequality leads to poorer health and higher mortality, and how living in a society with entrenched hierarchies increases the negative effects of illnesses for everyone.

Even before the pandemic, our mortality was going up, despite the Affordable Care Act and massive efforts to promote healthy lifestyles. Yet the public remains unaware that all the other rich nations–and quite a number of poor ones–have better health outcomes than we do. Stephen will dive into this, and more, at Closer to Home.

Make an Impact This Year and for Years to Come

"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow."

2023 is a year of seeding change and harvesting homes for Bellwether Housing. We believe in a tomorrow in which everyone in our community has access to a safe, stable, and affordable home; in which everyone has a home in which they can build their own tomorrow.

Our Building Opportunity Campaign has sprouted nearly 1,000 new homes in just three years. And our Resident Services Program couples housing with services, continuing to find new ways to support and enrich the lives of our residents. With your help, we can do even more. Funds raised at Closer to Home go directly toward our Resident Services Program.

Together, we are master gardeners. Join us in believing in tomorrow. Help us plant seeds of change and harvest homes for our community!
