Equality is building low-income housing in all neighborhoods. Housing is the lynchpin of all opportunity.”
Nikole Hannah-Jones, Keynote Speaker. New York Times Magazine Staff Writer 2017 MacArthur Genius Grant Fellow Winner of the National Magazine Award.
Thank you to those of you who attended our 9th Annual Closer to Home Lunch. With your support, we raised $428,000 and counting for affordable housing and communities of opportunity. We heard an amazing and powerful presentation from Nikole Hannah-Jones. The audience was left challenged and inspired to work on ways to better commit to providing equality, whether in public affordable housing or day-to-day actions. Thank you, Nikole Hannah-Jones!
Our event video featured two Bellwether Housing residents, Paris and Teba. We hope you’ll take a moment to hear their powerful stories of home and to share the video with friends and family.
As we see in the video, Teba has gone through years of instability, and we are so happy to provide her with a safe and stable home. She shares how her home at Bellwether impacted her life:
“I used to live in a shelter… but when you heard my story, you gave me everything I needed. You gave me a home and that’s the best thing I could ask for. This summer, I had an internship at University of Washington as a Teacher’s assistant. My caseworker, Nefertari, set it up. It really made me open my eyes that I want to be a teacher, because of my teachers. Now I’m going to be the first in my family to go to college.”
We are so grateful for our wonderful speakers and the amazing stories they told. Thank you for coming, and for making this event so powerful.
If you missed it this year - we hope to see you next year!
