Resident Stories

More Than a Place to Live

Families and individuals living in Bellwether apartments often experience relief from being rent burdened, finding their incomes stretch farther. Hear their stories of how their lives are improved by living in desirable buildings close to work, shopping, parks, and community resources.

David

David has lived near Virginia Mason Hospital for over 30 years. When his apartment building was demolished to make room for the hospital’s expansion, a former co-worker suggested that David apply for an apartment at the John Winthrop Apartments, which he moved into in 2004. He’s found the area to be an urban oasis. The bus service is good and there are parks, stores, pharmacies, and clinics close by. Now retired, David spends his time biking around the city and reading books. He vows that he is going to live at the John Winthrop forever!

Kisha-Marie

“My life is better than I could have imagined and [Bellwether] is the reason why.” The Cambridge Apartments offered Kisha-Marie a chance for a fresh start on life in the heart of the city. A resident since 2008, Kisha-Marie works on Capitol Hill, attends Seattle Central Community College, and spends time volunteering. Before finding Bellwether, she thought her only options were to live with a lot of roommates, live far outside of Seattle, or return to her birth state, Texas. Instead, she found a Bellwether apartment that she could afford on her own and that is close to everything she needs.

Jermaine and Siddeequa

Jermaine and Siddeequa were hit hard by the downturn in the economy. When the family’s income changed, they needed to find a more affordable apartment and discovered the Casa Pacifica Apartments. They were impressed with the beautiful apartment, the location of the building, and the affordable rent. Being able to walk to the park, shopping and appointments means that the family hardly ever needs to drive. With rent so low, they can also afford to meet their basic needs of food and health care. Jermaine and Siddeequa have peace of mind knowing their family has a warm, safe place to live.

Closer to Home: Our inaugural fundraising breakfast

Today was an important and memorable day for Housing Resources Group supporters, staff, residents and donors. We not only raised $110,685 at this morning’s event, but we unveiled our new name. Housing Resources Group is now Bellwether. The name changes, but the focus remains: to lead the region in solving its most pressing housing affordability issues. [...]

AFFORDABLE HOUSING – WHO NEEDS IT?

Do you know that working people in Seattle need affordable housing? Here’s an unavoidable reality: many people with full-time or part-time jobs – or more than one job! – face a growing gulf between what they earn and what it costs to rent a place to live. Minimum wage is simply not enough to afford to pay market-rate rents.
